Heritage Cleaning Case Study: Restoring the Patio & Balustrades at Queen’s House, Royal Greenwich
Project Overview
When it comes to heritage cleaning, there is no margin for error. Every surface tells a story. Every detail matters.
LBC Exterior Cleaning was appointed to carry out specialist patio cleaning at the iconic Queen’s House in Royal Greenwich, one of Britain’s most architecturally significant historic buildings.
World Heritage site Cleaning brief:
- DOFF Steam clean the patio to remove slippery surface and ensure safe for walking on.
- Protect delicate historic stonework
- Preserve patina while enhancing presentation
- Deliver results without disrupting visitors or damaging heritage fabric
About the Site
The Queen’s House, designed in 1616 by Inigo Jones, is considered the first classical building in England. As part of Royal Museums Greenwich and a UNESCO Maritime World Heritage Site, it demands the highest conservation standards.
The Heritage Cleaning Challenge
Historic structures present unique risks:
- Delicate stone and aged masonry
- Biological growth such as moss and algae
- Public access constraints
Our Specialist Heritage Cleaning Approach
Surface Assessment:
Material identification, integrity checks and sample patches ensured safe pressure thresholds.

Low-Pressure Conservation Cleaning:
We used the DOFF Steam cleaning system built by Sonehealth as the main piece of equipment for these works.
The original request was for Steam cleaning only, however due to over 15 years experience cleaning patios we explained to the client that this method alone would not get the best results possible. Steam cleaning alone removes a lot of surface staining however stubborn black spot requires an additional process of soft washing with cleaning chemicals to kill the organic growth – the black spots that have become established and are effectively growing into the stone.
soft washing systems and stone-safe treatments to remove organic growth without damaging the surface.
The original scope w just to clean the patio – Not the balustrades. However when the client seen the results we were able to get on the patio they asked to see a sample on the balustrades as well. The sample showed how good the stone balustrades could look and the client decided to go ahead with restoring them also.
Balustrade Detail Work:
Each section was carefully cleaned to avoid surface pitting, mortar disturbance or joint weakening.
Health & Safety
We implemented controlled work zones, chapter 8 safety barriers, warning cones and fully trained operatives experienced in heritage environments. Due to our large team we were also able to mobilize very quickly and manage to turn the project around in the short deadline window we had while the house was closed to the public.
Results

- Reduction in black spot staining
