The Ultimate Guide to Data Centre Cleaning: Interior & Exterior Maintenance

Why Data Centre Cleaning is Essential

Data centres are the backbone of modern businesses, housing critical IT infrastructure that must operate efficiently 24/7. However, without proper cleaning and maintenance, dust, debris, and environmental contaminants can compromise performance, leading to overheating, downtime, and even hardware failure. In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the different stages of data centre cleaning, covering both interior and exterior maintenance, and explaining why professional cleaning services are essential to protecting your investment.

Stages of Data Centre Cleaning

1. Post-Build Cleaning

Before a data centre becomes fully operational, it undergoes a post-build cleaning phase to remove construction dust, debris, and other contaminants. This ensures that the IT environment starts off in optimal condition, reducing the risk of contamination from the very beginning.

Key Post-Build Cleaning Tasks:

  • Removing construction dust from raised floors, racks, and ceilings
  • Deep cleaning server rooms and cable trays
  • HEPA vacuuming to eliminate fine particles
  • Electrostatic cleaning to prevent static buildup

2. Regular Maintenance Cleaning

Routine cleaning is essential to prevent dust buildup, which can obstruct airflow and lead to overheating. Regular maintenance should include both interior and exterior cleaning to ensure peak efficiency.

Interior Cleaning Tasks:

  • Floor and Subfloor Cleaning: Raised flooring in data centres can trap dust and contaminants underneath, which can then be recirculated into the air. Regular HEPA vacuuming and damp mopping help maintain cleanliness.
  • Server Rack & Equipment Cleaning: Anti-static microfiber cloths and vacuuming are used to clean servers, racks, and cooling systems without causing damage.
  • HVAC System Cleaning: Airflow is critical in a data centre, making HVAC maintenance essential. Cleaning air ducts and filters prevents dust and pollutants from circulating.
  • Ceiling & Cable Tray Cleaning: Dust and debris often accumulate in cable trays and overhead areas. Electrostatic and HEPA-filtered vacuuming ensure that these spaces remain contaminant-free.

Exterior Cleaning Tasks:

  • Roof & Ventilation Cleaning: Roof surfaces and air vents collect dust, dirt, and debris that can enter the facility. LBC Exterior Cleaning specializes in roof maintenance for data centres, ensuring that no external contaminants make their way inside.
  • Facade & Window Cleaning: The exterior of a data centre must be kept clean to prevent grime and dirt from accumulating, which can impact cooling efficiency and air quality inside the facility.
  • Ground & Drainage Area Cleaning: Keeping external walkways, drainage systems, and surrounding areas clear ensures that rainwater and debris do not impact airflow systems or cause blockages.

Why Professional Data Centre Cleaning is Necessary

Cleaning a data centre requires specialized techniques, equipment, and expertise. Unlike traditional commercial cleaning, data centre cleaning demands:

  • Anti-static cleaning methods to prevent electrical damage
  • HEPA filtration vacuums to capture fine dust particles
  • Specialized solutions that do not emit harmful vapours or leave residues
  • Highly trained technicians who understand the sensitivity of IT equipment

Hiring a professional exterior and interior cleaning team like LBC Exterior Cleaning ensures that all cleaning tasks are performed safely and effectively, minimizing the risk of contamination or damage.

Data Centre Cleaning Services

Your data centre runs 24/7. The dust doesn’t take a day off either.

Dust and debris get into fan bearings, heat sinks, raised floor voids, and cable trays which quietly restrict airflow, raising temperatures, and shortening the life of expensive hardware.

Research puts dust at the root of around 70% of server room breakdowns. The cost of unplanned downtime can hit hundreds of thousands of pounds an hour.

We clean data centres inside and out. From post-build deep cleans ahead of handover to ongoing maintenance, server room cleaning, and specialist exterior work on roofs, gantries, and facades. At LBC Exterior Cleaning, we cover the whole facility.

What Happens When a Data Centre Isn't Cleaned

It doesn’t fail all at once. It degrades quietly over time.

Dust clogs fans. Fans slow down. Temperatures creep up. Hardware starts throttling to protect itself and then, eventually, it stops protecting itself.

Here’s what’s happening inside an uncleaned facility:

  • Thermal clogging – dust in fan bearings and heat sinks blocks airflow. CPU temperatures can rise 30°F from dust build-up alone, which can cause sudden, irreversible hardware failure.
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD) – static builds up on surfaces and in floor voids. A single discharge event can silently damage servers, storage systems, or networking equipment.
  • Short circuits – conductive dust on circuit boards can bridge connections. In serious cases this leads to electrical fires.
  • Higher energy bills – dirty components force cooling systems to work harder. The Uptime Institute has measured up to a 20% increase in energy consumption in contaminated facilities.
  • Shorter equipment life – AWS research shows servers last 4 years instead of 3 when contamination is properly controlled. That’s a meaningful saving on replacement cycles.
  • Voided warranties – NVIDIA and Cisco both require ISO 14644-1 Class 8 environments as a condition of hardware warranty. If you’re not maintaining that standard, you may not be covered.

Our Data Centre Cleaning Services

Post-Build & Pre-Commissioning Cleans

Before a data centre goes live, it needs to start clean. Construction dust is everywhere, including raised floor voids, cable trays, ceiling spaces and every other surface you can think of.

We’ve done this kind of work across London and the South East, including large EPDM rubber roofs handed over from builders to tenants.

A thorough post-build clean means the facility starts from the right baseline and the incoming occupier gets a building that looks and feels like the premium space it’s supposed to be.

  • Construction dust removal from raised floors, sub-floors, racks, ceilings and cable trays
  • Wipe-down of all accessible surfaces ahead of commissioning
  • Roof and exterior cleaning as part of the handover package
  • HEPA vacuuming to remove fine particles before equipment is switched on

Routine Interior Maintenance

Ongoing scheduled cleaning stops dust from reaching the levels that cause problems. We work around your operational constraints with conveniently timed maintenance windows, out-of-hours access, live racks and clean in a sequence that doesn’t create new problems while solving old ones.

Raised floor panels are lifted carefully, a safe number at a time, so cold-air delivery to racks isn’t disrupted. We clean in the direction of airflow, starting from the floor and working toward air handling units, so cleaned areas don’t get recontaminated by disturbed dust.

  • Raised floor and subfloor HEPA vacuuming (particles captured down to 0.3 microns)
  • Server rack, cable, patch panel, and hardware cleaning using anti-static microfibre cloths and ESD-safe tools
  • Cable tray and ceiling void cleaning
  • HVAC, cooling fan, air filter and ventilation duct cleaning
  • UPS units, power distribution and battery area cleaning
  • Anti-static floor mopping and buffing

Server Room & Comms Room Cleaning

The same specialist approach applies whether you’re managing a large data hall or a smaller server room or comms room. Anti-static tools. HEPA filtration. Trained technicians who know what they’re handling.

  • Server room deep cleans – floors, subfloors, ceilings, racks, all accessible surfaces
  • Comms room cleaning – patch panels, network cabinets, cable management areas
  • Computer room cleaning – workstations, monitors, peripherals and IT equipment within controlled environments

Data Centre Exterior & Roof Cleaning

This is the bit most data centre cleaning companies don’t do, but we do.

The exterior of the building has a direct impact on what’s happening inside. Dirty roofs, blocked external vents and debris around air intakes all let contamination into air handling systems. It’s a slow drip of dust and organic material that undermines everything the interior cleaning team is trying to achieve.

Our background is in exterior cleaning – roofs, facades, gantries, drainage, access structures. We bring that expertise to data centres.

  • EPDM rubber roof cleaning – we’ve cleaned the large flat rubber roofs common on modern data centres, including a handover clean in Slough
  • Gantry cleaning including galvanised flooring and elevated walkways
  • Facade and cladding cleaning – removing algae, grime and pollution build-up
  • Drainage and ground-level clearing — keeping external drainage and air intakes clear
  • Chiller enclosures, generator plenums, RMU enclosures and condensers
  • Waterfed pole cleaning of cladded surfaces where watermarks are a concern
  • Pressure washing of concrete flooring

Emergency & Reactive Cleaning

Sometimes things go wrong, a cooling fault, a building works incident, an unexpected contamination event. We can mobilise quickly and get your facility back to a clean, safe state with minimum fuss.

How We Clean: The Important Stuff

Anti-Static Everything

ESD damage is invisible at the time it happens and expensive to diagnose afterwards. We use anti-static cloths, mops and wipes which are materials designed to dissipate static, not generate it. Everything that goes near your equipment is ESD-safe.

HEPA Filtration Not Just Vacuuming

A standard vacuum doesn’t capture fine particles but instead it moves them from the floor into the air and lets them settle elsewhere. Our HEPA-filtered vacuums capture particles down to 0.3 microns. Where we’re disturbing dust during cleaning, we run HEPA air scrubbers alongside to pull airborne particles out of the environment in real time.

Cleaning in the Right Order

We clean from floor to ceiling, in the direction of airflow, working toward air handling units. Raised floor panels are lifted one section at a time. Lifting too many at once risks a potential short-circuit of the cold-air delivery to the racks above.

No Residue Cleaning Solutions

Everything we use is chosen for sensitive IT environments. No products that off-gas, leave residues, or could void manufacturer warranties. We can work in live environments.

We Work Around You

Before any job, we talk to your facilities team about what’s live, what can be accessed, and when. We can work nights, weekends, or in sections during planned maintenance windows. The facility keeps running.

Cleaning Standards

The industry benchmark for data centres is ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 8 which is the international standard for controlled environments, based on airborne particle concentration.

This is referenced by the Data Centre Alliance (DCA) and is increasingly required by OEMs as a condition of hardware warranties.

Class 8 limits particles of 0.5 microns and above to 3,520,000 per cubic metre. ASHRAE’s contamination guidelines for data centres confirm that maintaining this standard is the most effective way to prevent particulate-related failures.

Manufacturers including NVIDIA and Cisco now state in their documentation that equipment must operate in environments meeting this standard. If they don’t, warranties may not hold.

Recent Work

EPDM Roof Clean Data Centre, Slough

We were brought in to clean a large EPDM rubber roof ahead of handover from the building contractor to the tenant. The job was about more than making it look good because clean roofs at handover demonstrate to the incoming occupier that the facility is starting from a proper baseline. No debris around air intakes, no biological growth working its way toward the ventilation system.

Gantry & Exterior Cleaning

Gantry structures with elevated walkways and galvanised steel platforms inside and around data centres need specialist access and a careful approach.

Our teams are used to working at height, with MEWPs and cherry pickers where needed, and know how to clean around sensitive infrastructure without causing damage.

Questions We Get Asked

We follow a structured sequence which involves HEPA vacuuming of the subfloor void first, then server racks and equipment using anti-static cloths, then cable trays and ceiling spaces, then floors. HEPA air scrubbers run throughout to catch anything disturbed during cleaning.

The exterior including roof, vents, drainage, facades is handled separately to stop external contaminants re-entering the facility.

Depends on the facility. Older raised floor systems, high foot traffic, or nearby construction work all push the frequency up.

Typically somewhere between quarterly and twice a year for interior cleaning, with exterior work scheduled around that. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on what we see.

Yes and this is exactly the kind of work we’re set up for. We work around operational constraints, maintenance windows, and access restrictions.

Electrostatic discharge is the sudden transfer of static electricity between two surfaces. In a data centre, a single ESD event can damage servers, storage or networking equipment sometimes without any visible sign. Everything we use is ESD-safe: anti-static cloths, mops, tools that dissipate charge rather than create it.

ISO 14644-1:2015 Class 8 is the international standard for controlled environments. This is the benchmark referenced by the Data Centre Alliance and required by OEMs including NVIDIA and Cisco as a condition of hardware warranty. Cleaning to this standard (or better) is now standard practice for any professionally run data centre.

Yes we do clean data centre roofs. Exterior cleaning is one of our core services, and we have specific experience on data centre roofs including EPDM rubber roofs on modern facilities. Keeping the roof clean prevents biological growth and debris from entering your air handling systems. It’s often the piece nobody else offers.

Zinc whiskers are microscopic conductive fibres that grow from the zinc coating on some older raised floor tiles. When disturbed they become airborne, settle on circuit boards, and can cause shorts. Remediation involves identifying and replacing affected tiles and cleaning the subfloor void. Talk to us if you think this might be an issue in your facility.

No and this is worth checking with any company you use. Standard commercial cleaning insurance does not cover data centre environments. The high value of the equipment and the specialist nature of the work require specific coverage. We have the right insurance in place.

Yes, we’re able to provide data centre cleaning across the UK.
