Acrylic pre mixed Renders have become increasing popular for builders and developers over the last decade or so, although stronger and more water resistant than the traditional sand and cement based renders, these newer coloured renders are textured and breathable and create the ideal growth conditions when mixed with the British climate for moss and algae’s to flourish. These organic growths usually present themselves in green, black or yellow staining and are best treated early on.
It is important not to attempt to clean any type of coloured render with high pressure, as you will see in the video below our team use low pressure high temperature method such as the DOFF steam cleaning system.
What’s the best Method for Cleaning Render?
It is a two part approach of steam cleaning and softwashing. Steam cleaning alone can leave a stripy result on the render. Softwashing alone will struggle to remove heavy moss or stains. But the two methods of steam cleaning and softwashing when combined produce the best results on when cleaning render.
Should you Paint Render?
Some people make the mistake of thinking that the solution to the staining on their render is to paint over it. This is definately not the correct approach as in a short period the staining will start to come through the paint.
The answer to should you paint your render depends on what type of render it is. Traditional sand and cement renders can be painted ( after cleaning and removing all organic staining) but more modern renders such as silicone, Monocouche and coloured renders such as K rend are designed not to need painting.
Modern ‘through coloured’ renders are designed NOT to be painted. They are made to keep their colour for decades with just the right type of cleaning and maintenance.
The staining on render is actually organic growth . Trentepholia is a green algae, however staining can also appear black, organge, red, and yellow. This staining can safely be removed by steam cleaning and softwashing. This approach is different to blasting with a high pressure jet wash which is where some people get confused.
Generally its only the older grey appearance sand and cement that requires painting.
If the render is on a newer build, coloured all the way through or you know it is silicone, monocouche or mineral clean it, dont paint it.
